HP ProBook 850 G8 No Power — Data Saved with BitLocker
A customer mailed in her HP ProBook 850 G8 that showed no signs of power—no lights, no charging indicator, nothing. Her main concern was recovering important data from her SSD, which was protected by BitLocker.
BitLocker is a built-in Windows encryption feature that keeps data secure. However, if the laptop won’t turn on—or if the SSD is removed and connected to another system—you’ll usually need a recovery key to access the files. Without it, the data stays locked.
After a careful board-level inspection, we found the issue: a shorted capacitor on the motherboard was preventing the system from powering on. We replaced the faulty component, and the laptop powered up normally again.
Because the original system was restored, BitLocker unlocked as expected, and the customer was able to access all of her data without needing any recovery key or complicated extraction.
Even with no power, your data isn’t always lost—sometimes it just takes the right fix.
